Eco-friendly Sunscreen and Tanning Oil

We're getting ready for summer....

**2023 UPDATE: I have recently learned that there was a lawsuit against Sun Bum stating that three of their products contain benzene, a known carcinogen, and the company did not include this on their product label (see link for lawsuit details).

I make an effort to share the best product information, so will update posts as information like this comes to light - hopefully not that often!!

The good news is that according to biggreenpurse.com, there are "236 beach and sport sunscreens meet Environmental Working Group’s criteria for providing healthy sunscreen protection that is nontoxic and helps prevent sunburn." Check out their post for 7 healthy sunscreen recommendations.

Original Post:

I live in North Carolina, and it was beautiful this past weekend! We went to a friend’s pool and had a great time on Sunday.

This got me thinking about all the summer products I love.

I have long known that sunscreens have tons of toxic ingredients in them. Because our skin is our largest organ and super permeable, I think a lot about what I put on.

I gave up toxic perfumes and make up years ago. But in the summer, we require something special – sunscreen!

I am a vitamin D loving sort of person. I do go out for short periods without sunscreen so that I can get the benefits of natural sunlight. However, I have a fair complexion and it is not healthy for me to burn, so I have used a lot of natural products over the past 10+ years on my eco-friendly journey.

This year I bought products from Sun Bum. They have developed “reef friendly” products that exclude ingredients that had been shown to harm ocean life, including coral reefs.

I donate to ocean charities monthly and know how important it is that we clean up our human act!

So, I read up on Sun Bum and liked what I saw. This is a quote from their website:

“We care about the planet. We care about the animals. We care about our families. So, we continue to look for ways to make our products without stuff that could hurt any of them.”

I saw that their products are vegan, gluten free, cruelty free, reef friendly, sulfate free and paraben free. I liked their credentials AND I liked their reviews on Amazon.

I saw comments like, “Sun Bum is magical,” “a life saver,” “…been buying this stuff for 3 years now…” and similar accolades. (One thing about more natural products is that we want to make sure they work as well as the chemical stuff!)

Anyway, we are heading to the beach in a couple of weeks, and I ordered several Sun Bum products. (No, this is not a sponsored post, I am just sharing about the stuff I buy!) If you want to check them out, here you go!

a can of spray sunscreen
a plastic spray bottle of tanning oil
a plastic bottle with the Sum Bum logo
a bottle of mineral sunscreen

For all of you in the northern hemisphere, I hope you have a great start to your summer season!

xoxoxo,
